Reasons to Elope In Boulder, Colorado
Eloping in Boulder, Colorado is an incredible choice for couples who want stunning mountain views, with easy accessibility to the city. Here are a few reasons why Boulder is a top elopement destination:
Lots of Lodging, restaurant & Vendor Options
There are plenty of unique and affordable lodging options such as A-Frames, domes and more! Boulder also has tons of local vendors for your elopement and restaurants for your intimate dinner/reception.
Lower Elevation
Boulder is only at 5,430 feet above sea level, so it can be better for those who struggle with altitude sickness rather than the 10,000+ ft mountain towns elsewhere in CO.
Best of both: City & Mountains
The most scenic and mountainous areas are about an hour drive outside of Boulder towards Black Hawk, Nederland and Ward.
Close To Denver Airport
Boulder is located just a 30 minute drive from Denver in Colorado. Denver has the biggest and most affordable airport to fly into, which is convenient if you or your guests are coming from out of state!

When To Elope In Boulder
The best time to elope in Boulder is May to November for the best weather, scenery and accessibility. Keep in mind some locations may be inaccessible during certain months- for example Flagstaff Summit Road is open seasonally from May 1 to Oct. 30, and access to some wilderness areas are only open July to mid-October. Winter elopements can be beautiful as well, but there are less locations accessible. It depends what your preferences are!
It’s important to understand the different seasons and climate in Boulder during the timeframe you’re considering. At 5,430 feet above sea level, Boulder’s climate is marked by dramatic shifts, making it possible to experience several seasons in a single day. The low humidity keeps summer heat bearable and makes winter cold less biting. The city’s 300+ sunny days per year ensure that even in the coldest months, there’s often bright blue sky overhead. Here’s a breakdown of the different seasons in Boulder:
Summer Boulder Elopement
June to mid September
Summer is the most popular season for elopements in Boulder. The days are long and temperatures are comfortable. The best part? All locations are accessible, and have perfect conditions. Plus, the wildflowers in the foothills and high alpine areas peak in mid-to-late summer, creating a colorful and romantic backdrop.
It can get hot mid-day, but mornings and evenings can still be chilly in the mountains. Keep in mind it’s dry, not humid, so even warm days are still comfortable. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the summer, so you may want to consider a sunrise or sunset ceremony.
Fall Boulder Elopement
Mid-September To November
Fall in Boulder is breathtaking, with golden aspens covering the surrounding mountains and crisp, cool air settling in. September often still feels like summer, but temperatures gradually drop into the 50s and 60s by October.
The first snowfall typically arrives in late October or November, bringing a mix of warm afternoons and chilly evenings. The higher elevations will have their leaves turn before lower elevations.
Winter Boulder Elopement
November to march
Winter elopements in Boulder are magical, with snow-covered landscapes and a cozy, romantic atmosphere. While temperatures range from the 30s to 50s during the day, overnight lows often dip into the teens.
Snowstorms can roll in unexpectedly, but Boulder’s frequent sunshine means fresh snow doesn’t last long in town. Higher-elevation locations hold snow much longer, creating a true winter wonderland for couples who want a snowy backdrop. Chinook winds can bring sudden warm spells, making some winter days surprisingly mild.
Spring Boulder Elopement
March, April & May
Spring elopements in Boulder can be unpredictable, with lingering snowfall in March and early April, followed by blooming wildflowers and green foothills in May. Temperatures range from the 30s to the 70s, and while sunny days are common, snowstorms can still happen unexpectedly.
Trails may be muddy from melting snow, so it’s important to choose locations with good drainage or paved paths. By late spring, the iconic Flatirons and surrounding landscapes are vibrant, making for a beautiful and lush setting.
Choose A Weekday At Sunrise Or Sunset
To make your Boulder elopement as private and magical as possible, we always recommend planning it on a weekday (Monday through Thursday). This helps avoid crowds and ensures a more intimate experience. Pair that with a sunrise or sunset ceremony for the perfect combination of privacy and stunning lighting.
Be Aware Of Important Dates
To ensure a more intimate elopement in Boulder, it’s best to avoid key events that can lead to large crowds. Major gatherings include the Boulder Creek Festival over Memorial Day weekend and CU Boulder graduation ceremonies in late May. The Fourth of July celebrations and summer weekends featuring the Boulder Outdoor Cinema can also draw significant crowds. Additionally, the Boulder Fall Fest in late September and the busy periods around Thanksgiving and Christmas should be considered. Lastly, the ski season from December to January can increase local traffic, making these times less ideal for a quiet elopement. Be sure to check out the Boulder events calendar to stay updated.

Eldorado Canyon State Park
Eldorado Canyon State Park is a beautiful area close to Boulder featuring towering golden sandstone cliffs, lush forests, and the rushing waters of South Boulder Creek.

How To Get Legally Married In Boulder Colorado
To legally get married in Boulder, you’ll need to obtain a Colorado marriage license. The Boulder County Clerk and Recorder Office is conveniently located at 1750 33rd St #100, Boulder, CO 80301. Keep in mind, you can get your marriage license from any county in Colorado, but it must be completed and returned to the same office where you received it.
There’s no residency requirement to marry in Boulder, so even if you’re coming from out of state or country, you can get married there. One of the unique perks? Colorado allows self-solemnization, meaning you don’t need an officiant or witnesses to make your marriage official. And for an extra personal touch, you can even have your pet “sign” your marriage license!
Boulder Elopement Permits & Regulations
It’s important to ensure you follow all regulations when eloping in Boulder, and obtain any necessary permits. Many locations have limits on how many guests you can have.
For areas in Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, your photographer will need a Commercial Use Permit. If you’re planning an event with more than 25 people total, your event is considered a special event and a special use permit is also required.
Hiring a local Boulder elopement photographer is key to ensuring your day goes smoothly. A knowledgeable photographer can guide you in determining which permits are required for your chosen locations and help you navigate the process with ease.
Equally important is adhering to Leave No Trace principles to protect Boulder’s beautiful landscapes. Be mindful of minimizing your impact, from staying on designated trails to packing out all waste. Additionally, be prepared for Colorado’s outdoor elements and wildlife—bring layers for unpredictable weather and stay aware of your surroundings to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

How Much Does It Cost To Elope In Boulder, Colorado?
Getting married in Boulder can be surprisingly affordable, with costs starting at just $30 for a marriage license from Boulder County. Beyond that, the total cost of your elopement will depend on your vision. At a minimum, you’ll likely want to budget for wedding attire, a photographer, a videographer, a florist, and hair and makeup services. Travel, transportation, and lodging may also factor into your expenses, but Boulder remains one of the more budget-friendly towns in Colorado.
The total cost will vary greatly depending on your wedding style. A simple elopement with no guests is far more affordable than a wedding with a reception, catering, and additional vendors. The beauty of elopements is that they can be as minimalist or extravagant as you wish—there’s no one-size-fits-all price tag!
Couples who work with us often prioritize their photos and overall experience, choosing to invest the majority of their budget in a photography package.
