Rocky Mountain National Park Engagement Photos
Updated For 2026
Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the best Colorado engagement session locations. If you’re considering taking Rocky Mountain National Park engagement photos, this is the guide for you! As photographers who have documented many sessions and elopements in RMNP, we’re here to guide you towards the best locations for your photos, how to plan your session, permit info, fees and more.

When To Take Engagement Photos In Rocky Mountain National Park
best time of year for your rocky mountain session
We always recommend having your engagement session on a weekday (Monday-Thursday) to minimize the amount of tourists that will be in the area.
Sunrise or sunset is the best time of day for the most privacy and best lighting!
Rocky Mountain National Park is a stunning location for engagement photos, offering breathtaking backdrops year-round.
The best time of year for your photos depends on the type of scenery and weather you prefer. Be sure to research the typical weather in Rocky Mountain National Park for the date you choose. Here are some considerations for each season:

Spring Engagement Photos
April, May & start of june
Early spring in RMNP can still look and feel like winter! It’s not unusual for there to be snow on the ground well into the end of spring, and snow storms can occur. The possibility of snow means you need to be prepared for sudden changes, and bring proper clothing and equipment like spikes for your shoes, depending on the trail. In late spring, the melting of the snow can cause muddy trails.
Some higher elevation areas like Trail Ridge Road are typically inaccessible until late May, so it’s essential to plan your locations carefully.
Summer Engagement Photos
End of june to mid-September
Summer, from July to August, offers warm and pleasant weather with lush greenery and full access to all park areas. Wildflowers are abundant, and the trails are mostly snow-free, making it an ideal time for photos.
However, this is also the park’s busiest season, which can make finding secluded spots more challenging. Scheduling your photo session early in the morning or late in the evening can help avoid crowds and provide softer, more flattering light.

Fall Engagement Photos
Mid-September and October
Fall, from September to October, brings stunning fall foliage, with aspen trees turning vibrant shades of yellow and orange. The temperatures are cooler, and there are fewer tourists, making it a fantastic time for photos.
However, the weather can start to get chilly, especially in October, and snow can arrive early at higher elevations, so it’s important to be prepared for these changes.
Winter Engagement Photos
November to march
Winter, from November to April, transforms the park into a magical, snow-covered wonderland. The landscapes are serene and offer unique photo opportunities with fewer visitors.
However, the cold temperatures, potential road closures, and limited access to certain areas can make winter sessions more challenging. The weather can be harsh and unpredictable, requiring careful planning and preparation.

How to plan a RMNP Engagement Session
guide by local photographers

Sunrise VS Sunset
Should you have your session in the morning or evening?
The best light happens in the morning right before sunrise and in the evening before sunset. Both have their pros and cons at this location.
Sunrise will typically be less busy and crowded, but you will have to hike in the dark to get there and it will be much colder.
We personally prefer sunset at this location as the sun goes down behind the mountains and creates beautiful light. Don’t forget a headlamp for the hike back!
Dream Lake Hike
How long is the hike to Dream Lake?
The hike to Dream Lake starts at the Bear Lake Trailhead in Rocky Mountain National Park. From there, it’s about a 2 mile hike roundtrip (1 mile to the lake and 1 mile back).
Be sure to come prepared with proper hiking shoes, layers, sun and rain protection and food and water!
