The San Juan Mountains offer the most epic views in the state. The mountains here really have the awe-factor!!

Intimate and secluded

If you’re looking for a quiet, intimate spot away from the crowds, choose the San Juans. You’ll truly feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere (in the best way)!

Hike or drive to your location

There are awesome hikes, but you can also just drive right up to tons of beautiful views. However, the roads here can be tough- a high clearance 4×4 is needed to reach many spots, and they’re not for those scared of heights.

When To Elope In The San Juan Mountains

best time of year for your san juan mountains elopement

The best time to elope in the San Juan Mountains is late June through early October, when the high alpine passes are open and the weather is best. July and August bring lush green meadows and wildflowers, while September and early October offer crisp air and some of the most vibrant fall colors in Colorado. Winter can be incredible as well if you’re prepared for the conditions.

Here’s a breakdown of the best time of year to elope in the San Juan Mountains:

Spring San Juan Mountains Elopement

April, May & june

Spring in the San Juans is a time of transition. The higher elevations are often still snow-covered, limiting access to a lot of areas. If you’re drawn to the idea of snowy peaks and blooming valleys, late spring can offer a beautiful contrast, though some trails and roads may still be closed.

Eloping in a shoulder season has its risks. We recommend waiting until summer for most location availability and weather certainty.

Summer San Juan Mountains Elopement

july to mid-september

Summer is the most popular time to elope in the San Juan Mountains (and our personal favorite)! The weather is generally warm, the wildflowers are in full bloom in July and August, and the high alpine areas are accessible.

Afternoon thunder storms are common in the summer months, but can mostly be avoided with sunrise + sunset elopements. Occasionally the weather makes certain locations unsafe- which is why we include a weather back up day with all of our San Juan Mountains elopement packages.

Fall San Juan Mountains Elopement

Mid-September to early October

Fall in the San Juans is MAGIC! There are golden aspen groves everywhere, providing the most beautiful colors for your elopement. The weather is cooler, especially in the high elevations in the mornings and evenings, but it’s generally pretty mild still (especially on a sunny day).

The last week of September to the first week of October is usually the peak time for fall colors, but the season can vary depending on the year. Be prepared for unpredictable weather, as snow can start to fall at higher elevations as early as late September.

Winter San Juan Mountains Elopement

november to march

Winter transforms the San Juan Mountains into a snowy wonderland! If you’re dreaming of a winter elopement with snow-covered peaks and cozy mountain vibes, this is the time for you.

Keep in mind that many trails and roads will be closed, and you’ll need to be prepared for cold temperatures and possible snowstorms. However, the solitude and beauty of a winter elopement can be incredibly rewarding.

Some are an easy walk from the car, while others are a short hike into something that feels totally untouched.

Hidden Waterfalls

The San Juan Mountains have the BEST waterfalls in Colorado, hands down. From the popular and iconic Bridal Veil Falls, to lesser known hidden gems like are shown here, there are tons of cascades to choose from for your San Juan Mountains elopement.

A lot of them are surprisingly easy to get to as well, especially if you’re okay with getting your feet wet on the way!

Jeep Trails

Some of the most jaw-dropping spots in the San Juans are only accessible by off roading! These locations will make you feel like you’re the only people around for miles, which makes them perfect for couples who want something really adventurous.

If you’re down for a 4×4 drive or a guided Jeep tour, the views up here are next-level. However, if you don’t have experience with these types of roads, we highly recommend hiring a driver.

Hiking Elopements

If you’re into hiking, the San Juan Mountains will absolutely blow you away. There are endless trails that lead through wildflower meadows, alpine basins, and up to some of the best views in the entire state.

These spots are especially magical at sunrise or sunset when it feels like the mountains are putting on a show just for you!

Where to stay in the san juan mountains

Just looking for lodging and wondering where to stay? We recommend searching AirBnB & VRBO for your dates to find lodging, as most hotels and condos are a bit outdated. Don’t forget to filter by pets allowed if you’re bringing one along!

Telluride â€“ A picturesque ski town with luxury hotels, boutique inns, and mountain view vacation rentals. Great dining, gondola access, and close to Bridal Veil Falls, Alta Lakes, and Imogene Pass.

Ouray â€“ Known as the “Switzerland of America,” Ouray has a small town feel with hot springs, charming hotels, and access to Box Canyon Falls, Yankee Boy Basin, and the Alpine Loop.

Ridgway â€“ A quieter base between Ouray and Telluride with more affordable lodging, cute cabins, and easy access to Last Dollar Road.

Silverton â€“ Rugged and remote, with historic mining era inns and cabins close to Engineer Pass, Molas Lake, and the Weminuche Wilderness. It’s a very small town, but close to the best spots.

Durango â€“ A larger town with plenty of hotels and vacation rentals, perfect if you want amenities and access to the southern San Juans.

how to get your

San Juan Mountains Marriage License

To officially and legally get married in the San Juan Mountains, you’ll need to obtain a Colorado marriage license. The cost is only $30, and there’s no waiting period—you can get it the same day, or up to 35 days in advance.

For the San Juan Mountains, the closest county clerk offices are the San Miguel County Clerk in Telluride, Ouray County Clerk, or the San Juan County Clerk in Silverton. Both parties must be present to apply, and you’ll need to bring valid identification, such as a driver’s license or passport. Some counties might require additional documentation or have specific requirements, so it’s a good idea to check in advance.

You can elope in the San Juan Mountains no matter where you live. Plus, Colorado allows self-solemnization, meaning no officiant or witnesses are required—you can even have your pet sign your marriage license if you like!

How much does A San Juan Mountains Elopement cost?

The most affordable way to elope in the San Juan Mountains is just $30 – the cost of a marriage license to make things official. That said, most couples choose to turn their elopement into a meaningful experience, investing in a full day (or even multiple days) to celebrate and soak up the adventure.

On average, elopements in the San Juan Mountains cost around $20k, with photography and videography often being the largest investment. Micro weddings tend to cost more since venues and catering minimums can add up quickly, especially with larger guest counts or higher-end locations.
