When To Elope In The San Juan Mountains

Best Time Of Year To Elope In the San juan mountains of Colorado

The San Juan Mountains are one of the most stunning and dramatic ranges in Colorado, offering a perfect backdrop for an unforgettable elopement. Choosing the best time to elope here depends on the experience you’re afterโ€”each season brings its own charm and considerations.

Spring

April, May & June

Spring in the San Juans is a time of transition. The higher elevations are often still snow-covered, limiting access to some areas. If you’re drawn to the idea of snowy peaks and blooming valleys, late spring can offer a beautiful contrast, though some trails and roads may still be closed. Eloping in a shoulder season has it’s risks!

Summer

July & August to mid September

Summer is the most popular time to elope in the San Juan Mountains. The weather is generally warm, the wildflowers are in full bloom, and the high alpine areas are accessible. This is the perfect time if you want to explore places like the Million Dollar Highway, Imogene Pass, or Blue Lakes. However, summer is also the busiest season, so you may want to plan your elopement during a weekday or early in the morning to avoid crowds.

Fall

Mid-September To Mid-October

Fall in the San Juans is magical. The aspen trees turn golden, and the mountains are ablaze with color. The weather is cooler, and the summer crowds have thinned out, making it a serene time to elope. Mid-September to early October is usually the peak time for fall colors, but the season can vary depending on the year. Be prepared for unpredictable weather, as snow can start to fall at higher elevations as early as late September.

Winter

November to march

Winter transforms the San Juan Mountains into a snowy wonderland. If you’re dreaming of a winter elopement with snow-covered peaks and cozy mountain vibes, this is the time for you. Popular spots like Telluride and Ouray offer breathtaking winter landscapes. Keep in mind that many trails and roads will be closed, and you’ll need to be prepared for cold temperatures and possible snowstorms. However, the solitude and beauty of a winter elopement can be incredibly rewarding.

Choose A Weekday At Sunrise

We always recommend having your wedding on a weekday (Monday-Thursday) to minimize the amount of tourists that will be in the area. Sunrise or sunset is the best time of day to elope for the most privacy and best lighting!

Be Aware Of Important Dates

When planning an elopement in the San Juan Mountains, it’s essential to be aware of key dates and events that might affect your experience. In June, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival draws large crowds, making the area busier and accommodations harder to find, so you may want to avoid this time unless youโ€™re into the festival vibe. Fall, particularly from mid-September to early October, is one of the busiest times in the San Juans due to the stunning fall foliage. The Million Dollar Highway and other popular spots can become packed with visitors, so booking accommodations well in advance is a must. Finally, winter brings ski season, with towns like Telluride and Silverton attracting winter sports enthusiasts, leading to busier areas and higher accommodation prices from December through March.

How To Get Legally Married In The San Juan Mountains

Getting married in the San Juan Mountains is a straightforward process, but it involves a few key steps to ensure everything is in order. Hereโ€™s a simple guide to help you navigate the process:

First, youโ€™ll need to obtain a marriage license. This is done through the county clerkโ€™s office. For the San Juan Mountains, this typically means the clerkโ€™s offices in San Miguel, Ouray, or Hinsdale counties. Both parties must be present to apply, and you’ll need to bring valid identification, such as a driverโ€™s license or passport. Some counties might require additional documentation or have specific requirements, so itโ€™s a good idea to check in advance. Thereโ€™s a small fee for the marriage license, which is usually $30.

You can choose to either have an officiant, or self-solemnize. Youโ€™ll then need to return the signed license to the county clerkโ€™s office where you obtained it. This step is crucial as it finalizes your marriage and ensures your marriage is legally recorded.

Finally, once processed, you can request certified copies of your marriage certificate from the county clerkโ€™s office. These copies are useful for name changes, insurance, and other legal matters.

San Juan Mountains Elopement Permits & Regulations

When eloping in the San Juan Mountains, you may need a Special Use Permit if you’re using public lands. Contact the local ranger district or forest office to check requirements and fees. Be aware of regulations regarding group size, equipment use, and environmental impact.

Additionally, itโ€™s essential to follow Leave No Trace principles to minimize your impact on the environment. This includes packing out all trash, avoiding damage to vegetation, and sticking to established trails.
