Hire Your Vendors

vendors for your elopement

When planning your elopement, choosing the right vendors can enhance your experience and ensure everything runs smoothly. Here’s a quick rundown of key vendors to consider:

ELOPEMENT PHOTOGRAPHER

Document your day with a photographer who specializes in elopements, particularly in your chosen location. They’ll know the best spots, lighting, and how to navigate less traditional settings.

ELOPEMENT VIDEOGRAPHER

A videographer can create a cinematic memory of your day, perfect for sharing with loved ones who couldn’t be there. Look for a photo & video team!

ELOPEMENT PLANNER

Most eloping couples don’t need a planner, as the photographer usually fills that role. However, if you’re planning a micro wedding you may want one.

FLORIST

We highly recommend getting florals for your elopement – bouquets and boutonnieres add a pop of color and are helpful with posing!

HAIR & MAKEUP ARTIST

Some choose to do their hair and makeup themselves, while others opt to hire a professional. There are pros and cons to each, so do what feels right to you.

BAKERY & PRIVATE CHEF

Even for a small elopement, having a cake or favorite dessert adds a sweet touch. Elevate your post-ceremony meal with a private chef who can craft a custom dining experience!

legal essentials

permits, license, etc.

Before you head out to say “I do,” it’s super important to get all the legal stuff squared away so your marriage is official. Whether it’s getting your marriage license or figuring out if you need an officiant, these details can vary depending on where you elope. Being prepared means you can focus on enjoying your day without worrying about the paperwork.

Location Permit(S)

Some locations, such as National Parks, require a permit to hold a ceremony or take photos. Be sure this is applied for well in advance and bring a physical copy with you.

ID, Passport & other documents

If you’re traveling, you’ll need to ensure you have your ID or passport. You may also need other documentation to get your marriage license.

Officiants & Witnesses

Depending where you elope, you may need an officiant or witnesses. Here in Colorado, you can self-solemnize which means you can get married without anyone else!

Attire & Accessories

elopement outfits

When planning what to wear for your elopement, consider the elements and how your attire will hold up in your chosen environment. Here’s a quick guide to essential items:

Suitable footwear

Select shoes that are both functional and stylish. Hiking boots or sturdy footwear are a must for outdoor elopements. Plus – seriously, you barely see your shoes.

Accessories

Optionally – you can purchase a veil, cape, hat, watch, unique tie, fun socks, etc!

jewelry

You may choose to get earrings, a necklace, rings, etc. Opt for pieces that complement your look without being too delicate.

Warm base layers

Even if you’re eloping in summer, it’s cold in the mountains (especially at sunrise/sunset). Skin colored leggings and undershirts can keep you warm while staying hidden under your outfit. Better to be safe than sorry!

Outer Layers

Choose outer layers that will keep you warm and dry AND that you’d be happy to have photos taken in.

Personal Touches

make your day special

When planning what to wear for your elopement, consider the elements and how your attire will hold up in your chosen environment. Here’s a quick guide to essential items:

Elopement Playlist

Create a playlist with songs that are special to you as a couple. Whether it’s for the ceremony or a private dance, music can set the mood and create lasting memories.

Keepsakes

Bring along small, sentimental items like a family heirloom, special jewelry, or even a framed photo to include in your day. These personal touches can be woven into your ceremony or photos.

Invitations or Announcements

Even if you’re eloping, sending out post-elopement announcements or intimate invitations for a later celebration is a thoughtful way to share your news with loved ones.

OUTDOOR GEAR

for adventure elopements

Having the right outdoor gear is essential for a smooth and enjoyable elopement, especially in remote or rugged locations. Here’s what you should consider packing:

Hiking Boots

Supportive, well-broken-in boots are key, especially if you’re navigating rocky trails or uneven terrain. Opt for waterproof options to handle unexpected weather.

Sun Protection

High altitudes mean stronger sun exposure. Don’t forget high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm, and polarized sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes.

Bug Spray

Mosquitoes and other insects can be bothersome, especially in summer or near water. Bring effective bug spray to keep pests away without disrupting your experience.

Hats and ear warmers

Keep your head and ears warm with a cozy beanie or ear warmers. Even in warmer months, temperatures can drop in the mountains, especially at sunrise or sunset.

hot hands

These warmers can be lifesavers in cold weather, keeping your hands, feet, and body toasty during your ceremony or while waiting for the perfect photo.

Oxygen (for High Elevations

If you’re heading to a high-altitude location and aren’t used to the elevation, a portable oxygen canister can help with shortness of breath or lightheadedness.

Bear bells/Spray

For locations where wildlife is a concern, especially in areas like national parks, carrying bear bells and bear spray is an essential safety precaution.

Headlamps / flashlights

If you’ll be hiking in the dark for a sunrise ceremony or staying out late for night photos, reliable headlamps or flashlights are crucial. Hands-free options are best for keeping your gear organized while navigating trails.

PICNIC ITEMS

for celebrating

Bringing along picnic gear can add a cozy and romantic element to your elopement, whether you’re celebrating post-ceremony or just enjoying the scenery. Here’s what to include:

Cups, cutlery & Napkins

Bring durable, reusable cups and cutlery that are easy to pack. Consider stylish napkins that match your elopement vibe—small details can make the moment even more special.

Charcuterie Board

Pre-packaged charcuterie boards, cheeses, fruits, or other snacks are perfect for an elegant, no-fuss picnic. Choose items that travel well and can be enjoyed at room temperature.

Sparkling water & Champagne

For a playful touch, pack a bottle of sparkling water to spray and celebrate after the ceremony! A bottle of your favorite champagne or sparkling wine is a must for toasting to your new adventure.

PET ITEMS

for celebrating

Including your pets in your elopement? Here’s what you’ll need to keep them comfortable and part of the celebration:

Portable Water Dish and Extra Water

Keep your pet hydrated with a collapsible water dish and plenty of extra water. This is especially important if you’re in a remote location or hiking.

Poop bags

Don’t forget the essentials—bring enough poop bags to clean up after your pet. Leaving no trace is important.

Leash

A strong leash is essential. Even if your pet listens off leash, most areas require pets to be on leash due to dangerous wildlife like moose.

Spiral Anchor

A spiral anchor can be handy if you need to secure your pet while you’re busy with photos or the ceremony.

Pet Safe Inkless Pad for “Signing” License

If you’re making your pet an honorary witness, bring a pet-safe inkless pad so they can “sign” your license with a paw print.

Safety

be prepared

Safety should always be a priority during your elopement, especially if you’re in a remote or rugged location. Here’s what to have on hand:

Snacks & Hydration

High-energy snacks like granola bars, nuts, and dried fruit keep you fueled throughout the day, while plenty of water is crucial for staying hydrated. Consider hydration packs or insulated water bottles if you’ll be in extreme temperatures.

Medications

Pack any daily medications you or your partner require, as well as extras like allergy medication, pain relief, or anti-nausea tablets. Ensure they’re easy to access during your elopement, especially if you’ll be out for the entire day.

Garmin inreach

In areas with little to no cell service, a Garmin InReach or other satellite communication device is a lifesaver. It allows you to send messages, track your location, and call for help in case of an emergency, offering peace of mind when venturing into remote terrain.

Day of essentials

remember to pack

Your day-of essentials keep everything running smoothly, ensuring you’re prepared for anything that comes your way. Here’s what to have on hand:

Water & Snacks

Staying hydrated and energized is key, especially if you’re in a remote location or hiking. Bring easy-to-eat snacks like granola bars, trail mix, or fresh fruit, along with enough water for the day.

Makeup Touch-Up Kit + Hair Brush

Pack a small kit with powder, lipstick, and a brush to keep you looking fresh throughout the day. Include extra bobby pins or hair ties if needed, especially if it’s windy.

Downloaded Offline Google Maps

If your location has spotty cell service, download offline maps to ensure you can navigate to your elopement spot and any backup locations without a hitch.

Elopement Timeline/Itinerary

Even with a more relaxed vibe, having a basic timeline keeps everyone on track. Include ceremony time, photo sessions, and buffer times for any unexpected delays.

Backup Plans + Weather Monitoring

In the mountains or outdoors, weather can be unpredictable. Have backup locations, extra layers, and a weather app handy to track any sudden changes and adjust your plans as needed.
